Technical Tools

I promised I'd revisit the technology challenges I've encountered in this journey, so here is my sad story....

When I first started this blog I was figuring it would be really easy to pull all the necessary parts together to keep a journal of our trip to Europe. I wanted to be able to post some photos, add a few words to talk about them, and since others asked to be informed, see if I could tell if anyone read it.

I had used a product called "Blogspot" in the past and found it pretty easy to use when I used a desktop to put the blog together, with photos downloaded from our digital camera. Since technology changes at the speed of light I figured that using mobile technology would be a snap with Blogspot. Blogspot must be worlds ahead by now.

Not so boy wonder! Well, it didn't seem so at first. When I started, I found that I had to use many many different products to try to make everything fit together. Blogspot had been acquired by Google and I found no way to easily embed photos from my phone. Was it because I was using an iPhone?  Don't know. I ended up setting up a Picasa account (Google product) so I could upload pictures from the phone into Picasa and then pull the photos from there into the web version of Blogspot. And, of course, navigating this whole process was incredibly time consuming and convoluted. I was so frustrated that I set up a Weebly account (thanks for the reference, Alan), but it didn't solve my issues.

Finally, far too late, I got smart and looked to see if there was an easy-to-use blogging app. And what do you know--Blogger (aka Blogspot) is just that. Very simple to get things set up. I did it at the airport in Charlotte in less than 30 minutes and have been using it since.

David and I share the account so he can start a posting, put in some of his pictures, save it as a draft, hand it off to me to finish it up and add some of my photos before publishing. The one thing I can't do with the app is pull stats, so I still use the web version for that. Guess you aren't too old to learn new tricks, but I wish I had learned this one earlier!

So my story is no longer a sad one. We are able to post our photos and text in about 20 minutes before hitting the sack. Now we can look back at our trip and not have to remember what day we went where.
